Scala Radio

You can find me this Saturday 11.15-12noon with Simon Mayo on Scala Radio. Don’t forget to re-tune your digital radio, or listen online.

This week’s dishes are nicely seasonal as I’ve been cooking with elderflowers See my Scala Recipes section for the dishes. I’ve paired them with Longton & Renegade’s Sparkling Elderfower Wine (13% abv), and Rocks Organic Spring Elderflower Cordial. In my Elderflower Granita I used Salcombe Gin’s Island Queen (46% abv) & very good it was too!

Berko Book Festival

at Berkhamsted Town Hall & Rectory Lane Cemetery

A great line up including authors Julie Caplin, Claire Harding, Lisa Jewell and Derek Pringle (yes, the famous cricketer).

I’m delighted to be interviewing food and drink writer, Pete Brown at 1.00-1.50pm, and I’m absurdly excited to be conducting an audience with King Crimson’s guitarist, Jakko Jakszyk at 3.00-3.50pm.

Breaking Berko Bookfest news… I’m going to be welcoming to the Clock Room Stage at 10.15am authors Stuart Turton (The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle) and Jamie Fewery (Our Life in a Day).

At 12noon I’m with Olga Melita in the Great Hall as she lays on a workshop about Emotional Self-Regulations with Essential Oils… I think I’m going to be putting in a big order for some of these.

The World Cheese Awards 2018

I’m about to pack my bags as we head off to Bergen, Norway, for the World Cheese Awards now entering it’s 31st year. A record-breaking number of cheeses from every corner of the globe are expected to line up in the judging hall at Bergen’s Grieghallen on 2 November 2018.

Kraftkar, a Norwegian Blue Cheese was voted the Supreme Champion 2 years ago when the awards were held in San Sebastian in the Basque country & the Norwegians have volunteered to stage this year’s awards. I’ll be hosting World Cheese TV (I kid you not!) on Friday 2nd November, alongside the fabulous Jo Pickard, so go online & track us down. Here's the link to the World Cheese Awards web page, where WCA TV will be streamed www.gff.co.uk/wca

'Nigel Barden's Drivetime Dishes' on Simply Good Food TV

I'm hugely excited to be hosting a new TV series 'Nigel Barden's Drivetime Dishes' on Simply Good Food TV, the first two of which are available now on Amazon Prime Video.  These are the first of 6 weekly shows, where I am showcasing a range of food & drink from artisan producers, while test-driving recipes from some favourite chefs.

In the first episode I'm cooking up an Espresso Rubbed Tomahawk Steak dish from The Great Taste Awards book 'Food Stories'.  My guest is Chef Jon Fell, of The Green Room Restaurant, Rosehill Theatre, Whitehaven, & the excellent Tomahawk steak is from Jo & Tim Budden's Higher Hacknell Farm in Burrington, Devon & I've used lashings of Duncan Farrington's Northamptonshire Mellow Yellow Rapeseed Oil. The rub uses Great Taste Award winning Coaltown coffee from Scott & Gordon James of Ammanford, Carmarthenshire. I'm also tasting Angry Wasp cider from the Cambridge Cider Co. & my soft drink is a Sparkling Rhubarb & Apple, from Cawston Press.

In the second episode, I’m cooking Turkey Schnitzel with Lemon & Caper Butter from Tom Kerridge’s ‘Dopamine Diet’ cookbook. My guest is chef & author Peter Sidwell, who is the founder of Simply Good Food TV & the Keswick Cookery School. The turkey fillet is from Paul Kelly’s award winning Kelly Bronze free-range turkeys, based at Springate Farm in Danbury, Essex. I’m tasting alongside an Austrian white wine, Grüner Veltliner Weinviertel Baumgartner, from Tanners Wine Merchants, based in Shrewsbury since 1842. My soft drink is a drinking vinegar, known as a ‘shrub’, & it’s Nonsuch Blackcurrant & Juniper from Aspall in Stowmarket, Suffolk, birthed by Henry Chevalier Guild of the Aspall cider family.

Episode 3 is about to be broadcast, featuring Diana Henry’s Flourless Chocolate Cake with Whisky Cream, from her excellent tome ‘Simple - effortless food, big flavours’. I’m helped out in the kitchen by Vhari Russell, one of the founders of Simply Good Food TV, who I’ve made this series with. It’s been a lot of fun, as is Vhari.

The programmes also air on Simply Good Food TV, where they are available to the free app's 550,000 subscribers.  Click on the link to see the trailer & more… https://www.simplygoodfoodtv.com/nigelbardensdrivetimedishes
